Last night the cast of the Civic's By the Way, Meet Vera Stark ran the show for the volunteers who are going to be running lights, sound, costumes, etc. Although we weren't surprised to hear a few laughs (I mean, we knew it was funny), we were overwhelmed at the response.

"Marrisa is shameless," someone giggled.

"I missed so much in that scene I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard," another uttered.

"I'm upset I didn't audition for this show."

"Sleeper hit of the season!"

If you liked Blazing Saddles, you have to see By the Way Meet Vera Stark. It has all the irreverence of the Mel Brooks' comedy without shortchanging the audience on story. The subtle (and not so subtle) references to racism in Hollywood could not be captured better than in this mock-up movie poster of a film the character Vera Stark goes on to star in later in her career.
