9 Times Interviewers Outclassed Musicians
Being an interviewer isn’t the easier job, especially when you’re dealing with egos that could fill a stadium. During a heated verbal exchange, viewers usually root for the musician, but here’s nine times interviewers maintained the upper hand.
One CBS interview with Ted Nugent has become a modern classic, thanks to the Motor City Madman’s random outburst about fellatio. When asked about his polarizing demeanor, Nugent unexpectedly unleashed on his public portrayal. “I’m an extremely loving, passionate man and people who investigate me honestly, without the baggage of political correctness, ascertain the conclusion that I’m a damn nice guy, and if you can find a screening process more powerful than that, I’ll suck a dick! Or fuck her, [female producer] how ‘bout that?”
Another classic moment comes from the almighty Nardwuar when he spoke with Henry Rollins in 1998. The temperamental punk legend began to max out on Nardwuar’s erratic persona and questions about the 1980s, telling the Canadian interviewer to wrap things up. Instead of going to his final questions, Nardwuar dumped every remaining query on Rollins at once, winning over the musician in an instant.
One of 2019’s most viral interviews came from a Punk panel celebrating the new TV series, when Sex Pistols / PiL singer Johnny Rotten came to verbal blows with numerous panelists and the night’s interviewer. Rotten mistakenly thought the inquisitor was asking him what he learned about punk from the series, which set Rotten off. Things later got heated between Rotten and Ramones drummer Marky Ramone, leading to the interviewer attempting to physically bridge peace between the two.
