Now that spring has finally arrived in West Michigan we're all eager to get back into the great outdoors and enjoy some sunshine and fresh air. Here in the greater Kalamazoo area I've noticed birds nesting, trees budding, and tulips blossoming-- it's really happening!

I happen to live right near Asylum Lake Preserve and it's always fun to hop on the trails and be surrounded by nature, however bikes and other propelled modes of transportation are prohibited.

As someone who lives in an apartment I don't really have a lot of room for bike storage or an easy way to transport a bike from park to park, that's why I'm so excited the City of Portage is once again offering a bike rental program for its parks division.

The City of Portage shared the news on their official Facebook page writing,

Explore the Portage Park trail system on two wheels. Rent a bicycle at the BIKE PORTAGE bike station on the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail, just north of the Celery Flats Pavilion...Bicycles must be returned to the rental location by park closing time each day.

How Does it Work?

The program is offered April through October 31, 2024. Riders can opt to pay walk-up pricing or splurge on a yearly $50 membership which allows you to ride your first hour for free; either way both membership and non-members will only pay a maximum $20 per day.

Riders must download the Movatic companion app in order to rent and unlock your bike. Then you're free to explore the Portage parks system until dark! Helmets are no provided nor required, but are highly encouraged.
