The Kalamazoo's financial elite are in for a treat as plans once made to turn a plot of land into temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness have now been purchased by the Kalamazoo Country Club.

The development plan which includes turning the site into a much-needed 9-hole golf course now awaits approval from the city of Kalamazoo. There's no word yet if the nearly $1 million spent last year on new golf carts will be used at the site after the highly anticipated approval.

Still, it would most definitely help solve the issue of the "not enough golf courses" epidemic of sorts that the city has been facing for the past few years, as the plan was laid out:

Plans for the development are waiting for approval through the city of Kalamazoo’s site plan review process. The property, located just south of the country club along the west shore of Whites Lake, includes 3919 Oakland Drive, 3921 Oakland Drive, 3903 Ruthin Road, and 1823 Hazel Ave. Developers intend to remove more trees than usually allowed by city ordinance, with an agreement in place to plant 4.5 acres of trees and 2.5 acres of native grasses afterward. Oakland Finance LLC owns the land.

Priorities: Golf > Homelessness

In 2021 the city cracked down on driving away homeless encampments around the city including the Ampersee encampment which had over 150 people at one point. In August, Houseless individuals protested at City Hall. Most lived in the Riverview encampment when police allegedly physically forced people out of the encampments and bulldozed their belongings, according to a witness.

To this day, a serious plan to solve the homeless and houseless situation has had minimal progress. While thousands in the community have offered suggestions on where to get the funds for any project that would offer a solution, last year Mayor Anderson allegedly stated on television that not one single person had come forward with ideas for supporting the homeless.

I guess the most important thing at this point is finding out if they'll offer club rentals if it gets approved.
