We've seen this before, but now the Mackinac Bridge Authority is making it easier than ever to own a piece of the Mighty Mac.

When they first auctioned off sections of the decking that was replaced on the Mackinac Bridge, the pieces were gigantic. Each remnant was 5 1/2' long and x 38' wide; at 5 inches deep, each section weighed TWO TONS. Now, much more manageable 10' x 10' sections weighing 200 lbs. are being auctioned off, with bids starting at just $10.

Proceeds go back to maintaining the bridge, and the auction site describes the lot as:

Section of original steel grating from the Mackinac Bridge deck. Selling 10 individual, identical pieces of grating separately. THIS AUCTION IS FOR ONE PIECE. Pieces are approximately 33 inches by 55 inches and 5 inches deep. Condition is used with corrosion and section loss appropriate to steel that is 60 years old.

Grating was originally coated with lead based paint. Much of this is gone, but Buyer will have to sign a "Hold Harmless agreement" related to the lead paint and the structural condition of the grating.

As of this writing, some bids have reached $45 but if you scroll down, you can still get in on the ground floor at the $10 level. You will still have to pick it up and transport your piece of the bridge at your own cost, but it seems a small price to pay for a Michigan souvenir like no other.
