Do Michigan residents need to fight to eliminate AI data centers in Michigan? Probably one of the biggest complaints we are seeing on social media is the introduction of AI and how this intelligence is not only bad for the environment, but is a platform that steals intellectual property from designers and artists.

Unfortunately, Michigan is quickly becoming a major hub for AI infrastructure, with over 16,000 acres worth of data center sites proposed in 2025.

Everywhere from Saline Township to Ypsilanti and also in Kent and Allegan counties. But why is AI so dangerous for the environment?

Why Is AI Dangerous To The Enviornment?

As anybody who’s used a computer before knows, those things can get pretty hot. Water towers are used to evaporate water to cool servers, and it’s suggested that one simple AI prompt can consume an entire bottle of water, and that’s for the simpler prompts.

According to the Environmental Law Institute, they revealed some pretty shocking numbers as to how much water it has used:

The vast majority of a data center’s water footprint is from indirect water use. In the U.S., data centers have an indirect water footprint of about 800 billion liters. One way that data centers indirectly consume water is through electricity generation. Electricity generation, particularly from thermal power plants, requires vast quantities of water for steam production and cooling.

This is just one of many issues that data centers can cause for our environment.

Why Is AI Dangerous For Artists?

As far as artists are concerned, there is no opting out for them.

If they have put their artwork on social media, AI data centers have already stolen their work, and if you give AI a prompt to make artwork in the stylings of a particular artist, you will shockingly see results that closely resemble that artist's artwork, except considerably uglier and noticeably fake.

Still, the ability to copy someone else’s intellectual property and duplicate it is incredibly problematic. Is it time pfor eople stand up to put an end to these AI data centers in Michigan?
