Should Michigan Lower The Legal Drinking Age Back Down To 18?
Many people agree that turning the minimum drinking age in Michigan from 18 to 21 was a bit of a irrational move by the government. The argument has been maintained over the years that regardless of the minimum drinking age, kids will continue to do whatever they can to get alcohol before they turn 21.
The fact of the matter is is that for the longest time up until 1978, Michigan’s legal drinking age was 18, but went up to 21 in December of that year. Originally the change was made to fight against the rising number of accidents involving young drivers who were under the influence of alcohol.
But feel like the drinking age could go back down to 18, with proper education. As it turns out, most kids in Michigan are having their first drink before 18 anyway.
Recently, Ovidlife.com did a study where they asked a large number of people at what age they experienced some of their "firsts." This ranged in everything from first kiss, drinking, first broken bone, first pet etc., and found that most Michigan kids have their first drink before the age of 18:
Michigan reports an overall average age of 18 years for experiencing first milestones. Michigan residents meet their first furry friends and go on their first dates later than most, at ages 18 years 5 months, and 17 years respectively, the oldest for these events. Michigan Residents also have their first alcoholic drink at age 17.50 compared to the average age of 16 years and 9 months.
Do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea for the legal drinking age in Michigan to go back down to 18?
