Are we really living in a world where in order to come into school, you’ll have to walk through a metal detector? It very much could be the future of not only all schools the Kalamazoo public school in particular as Superintendent of Kalamazoo public schools Darrin Slade and other members of the board are strongly considering using metal detectors regularly.
There has been a lot of gun violence in school over the years, and it’s honestly way too much to comprehend. There was even a point in 2024 when guns were removed from Kalamazoo Central High School, which could have led to something unspeakable and traumatic.

But this is the world that we live in. There is a Zucker Brothers film called High School High, which is a comedy film, but in the beginning, it shows students walking through a metal detector and having various weapons taken away from them.
Although this is a satirical film, of the classic Stand And Deliver, it made me laugh that this was a necessary thing for school. However, this was before school shootings were a regular thing.
But at this point in the game, there is no laughing when it comes to making sure that schools are protected from violence, especially gun violence. But as superintendent, Darren Slade commented, it’s just an extra blanket of protection:
It’s just an additional layer of security to make sure our kids are safe. I know a lot of principals, when I started, they talked about having them. Teachers also. Even parents.
Do you feel like it’s necessary to have never detectives in school, and do you feel that this is something that should just be mandatory for all schools going forward?
I know it seems like a little bit of a worry, but at the same time, parents should not have to worry about whether their kids come home from school alive.
