Detroit Red Wings fans have been expecting this over the past few years but nobody expected it this soon.  The captain's playing days are now over.

According to M-Live,  Red Wings Captain, Henrik Zetterberg announced that his career is over.    Back issues that have bothered him in recent years have finally made it to where he can't play again.

It is sad to see him go out this way as he was a major leader on this  team over his career which started back in the 2002-2003 season.

He was the current captain of the team, which he was named after the retirement of Nick Lidstrom.  Now that it is official that he is done playing who will take the over the leadership role for the team?

It looks like Dylan Larkin is next in line, for not only being the top line center, but also eventually taking over as captain.   I personally hope that this season they just go with no captain.   They can decide on that next year.

If they did decide to give it to Dylan this year I feel it would put a ton of pressure on him. Let him play a year without Hank and see how he does.

It leaves a big hole in the lineup but as the team is still rebuilding there is hope.   I looked at 3 reasons why fans are hopeful for the future in Detroit here.

Thank you Hank for leaving it all on the ice.  Hope one day we'll not only see his number in the rafters at Little Caesars Arena, but also in the Hall of Fame in Toronto.
