Detroit Red Wings defenseman, Niklas Kronwall is the Red Wings nominee for the Masterton Trophy for 2019.

According to the Detroit News, the Red Wings veteran is the teams nominee for this year.  Each team has a player nominated  for the award.  It is given to the player who “best exemplifies the qualitiy of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey.”

Kronwall has been a major part of the defense for the Red Wings since he came up in the early 2000's.  He had played 73 of 76 games this season.  All of these games playing with a knee issue that he had stem cell therapy on a couple years ago.

He is also approaching the 1,000 games played milestone with the Red Wings.   His contract is up after this season and there has been some talk that he may retire.

He has stayed healthy and in the lineup so he may come back.  He said he will make his decision in the off season.

The award will be given out along with the rest of the NHL awards in June.
