I've lived in some sketchy places in my life. Not just some questionable neighborhoods, but also some risky towns as well. When you get that, "OH, you're from (insert sketchy town here)... man, stay safe.," you know you're living on the edge.

So it's smart, when you're moving to a new state, to consider the communities you might be living and working in, and Michigan might have some of those dangerous spots, but there's also some very safe places to live.

Safety is the name of the game in Michigan. There's a lot here that could harm, or kill you, not the least of which includes mother nature. Michiganders crated the "Yooper Scooper" to safely eliminate snow from the roof, and some even say the deer practically lie down in front of you so you don't even have to take the safety off your rifles when hunting.

OK, that last bit might be a bit much, but Michigan does like to tout its safety, and there are 10 communities in the state that Homesnacks has listed as the safest places to live.

They took a look at 210 communities with more than 5,000 residents, and took into account property and violent crimes per capita, and the list they came up with might surprise you.

According to the FBI analytics, the safest community... is Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula. It's isolated, cold, and about as close to Wisconsin as you'd want to be without crossing the state line. The population is JUST over 7,000 people, and scored an 8/10. In fact, in every category of crime - violent, property, and murder - it scored less than 1 per 100,000 people. In a town of less than 10,000 people, that's a tough thing to come by, since every instance would be the equivalent of 10 people in a community of 100,000.

The full list is as follows:

  1. Iron Mountain
  2. Thetford
  3. Kinross
  4. Oakland
  5. Grosse Ile
  6. Gaines
  7. Addison
  8. River Rouge
  9. Green Oak
  10. New Baltimore

Worth noting... absolutely NO west Michigan cities or townships on the list. All in the Upper Peninsula, the Central Lower Peninsula, and the Detroit area, with ONE exception in the southern part of the state.

What do you think of the list? Did they nail it? And if you're city isn't on the list, do YOU feel safe where you live?
