February 23rd-March 9th is the period where NFL teams can put the franchise tag on one (and only one) of the team's impending unrestricted free agents (UFA's).  Each year NFL teams can give one of their pending UFA's the tag, thus keeping him with the team.

The Detroit Lions have several unrestricted free agents that are looking for contracts for the 2021 season (and beyond).  Veteran wide receiver Marvin Jones is one of them, but the most prominent UFA is fellow wide receiver Kenny Golladay (pictured).

Golladay was the Lions 3rd round pick in 2017 out of Northern Illinois.  And he has shown some major promise during his time in the Motor City.  He led the NFL with 11 receiving touchdowns in 2019 and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

However, in 2020, he played in only five games due to injury.  He caught only 20 passes for over 300 yards and two touchdowns.  But he was unhappy in camp and throughout the 2020 season as he was public about wanting a new contract.

The Lions are currently tight against the salary cap for 2021 (reportedly at a minimum of $180 million per team), according to spotrac.com.

Now, if the Lions franchise tag Golladay, he would cost just shy of $16 million for the 2021 season.  And then he would become an unrestricted free agent or possibly be franchised again after the 2021 season.

Lions fans, what do you think they should do??  Commit to him long-term, or make him prove it over the 2021 season under the franchise tag and then cash in next season?  Or do you let him walk in free agency?

The team has until March 9th to decide what to do with Golladay.
