A vigil was held in Battle Creek Thursday evening, in honor of two black men killed by police in the past week.

Several dozen residents and community leaders gathered first at First Congregational Church, and then at the Sojourner Truth Memorial, to mourn the deaths of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, LA and Philando Castille in St. Paul, MN.

Those in attendance expressed worry that someone they know could be killed in a similar way.  However, the Battle creek Police Department was praised for their efforts at communicating with residents, and for training in racial equity.

Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker spoke at the event.
