A Kalamazoo woman and her daughter are in custody after they were caught shoplifting from several Battle Creek stores.

Battle Creek Police Officers responded to the Lakeview Square Mall around 8pm Friday, after a customer spotted a 15-year-old girl stealing clothing.  The teen fled to the parking lot, followed by a Mall Security officer, where the girl’s 34-year-old mother was waiting in her car.

The woman hit the mall security officer in an attempt to get away; luckily, the guard wasn’t injured.

When police arrived, they arrested the pair and found around $2300 worth of stolen items in the vehicle, concealed inside shopping bags meant to conceal security tags.  Police also found marijuana in the car.

The suspects are facing charges of organized retail fraud, with the mother also facing felonious assault with a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and an additional warrant.  A contributing to the delinquency of a minor charge might also be levied.
