We recently learned that Michigan would soon be getting hit with a wave of temperatures that will cool down the area, ushering the hard facts of autumn that fall is upon us and then soon winter will be here. Every year, Michigan drivers and residents are reminded of the state laws regarding snow removal, and the penalties and fines that can be faced if you do things illegally with snow.

Michigan has once again been prompting its residents they will pay a new $100 fine that could be faced during winter days with heavy snow. We already know about the fine that you can receive if you shovel snow off your driveway into the street. there’s also another fine that you can receive that many people, from my experience at least, have no problem getting in trouble for and that’s the removal of snow and ice off of the top of their vehicle before leaving their current location.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been whacked in the windshield by a giant slab of snow because somebody couldn’t find the 275 days to go and get a push broom so they could wipe off the top of their car. Now Michigan drivers face a $100 penalty for driving too close to snowplows.

The civil infraction states that drivers should not be any closer than 200 feet to a snowplow that’s actively sanding or salting. Michigan police are also enforcing that people stay 20 feet away when a plow is stopped at an intersection.

Governor Gretchen Wittmer signed the new law on July 30 as MLive reported that in the last five years, there were 114 crashes involving snow plows. I guarantee as many people see and read this, there will still be people who break the law so we will be curious to see how many civil infractions are met this winter when people ignore the new law.
