Out of all of the Urban Legends in the Great Lakes area, the one that gives me the most creeps is the legend of a giant Loch Ness-type beast that is rumored to live somewhere in Lake Erie, named Bessie. Accounts of the beast go all the way back to the 1700s, with one account detailing the captain of a boat's terrifying experience, according to Great Lakes Guide:

It’s 1793 and the captain of the Felicity is steering his sailboat through the shallows of Lake Erie’s islands, duck hunting and admiring the rugged natural beauty of the area. His loud shots ring out, echoing over the still water.

The Beast Lives

Suddenly, the captain sees something that makes his blood run cold.

According to the captain, an enormous serpent had started thrashing around near his boat, having been startled by the gunshots. He reported that the creature was huge—easily over 5 meters long—though it disappeared before he could get a better look at it.

Sandlot Origins

I do find it very interesting that there just so happens to be an urban legend about a giant Loch Ness-type monster in Lake Erie, a beast if you will, while at the same time, there is a Babe Ruth homerun ball allegedly on the bottom of the lake.

Maybe someday there could be a movie where a bunch of kids attempt to go into Lake Erie to get the Babe Ruth ball out of the water while the beast protects it and keeps them from ever getting it. No…that would never work as a movie.
