A 4th brewery?  It could happen.   Battle Creek currently has one brewery, Territorial Brewing.   New Holland is moving into the old Penny's/Cole's store at the corner of Michigan and McCamly.   A mystery brewery is coming to the old Officeways building on Carlyle.  On Monday, Battle Creek Unlimited CEO Joe Sobieralski hinted that another brewery could possibly be moving into downtown Battle Creek.

BCU offered $200,000 in startup funds for downtown breweries.  New Holland Brewery was the first to take them up on the offer.  Sobieralski says “you should see some heavy construction” this fall at the corner of Michigan and McCamly St.  He says contractors have already been working inside to uncover what's inside the building, to aid in the overall plan for the space.   He says plans right now are for production to take place in the basement and for retail on the first floor.  He says the second floor is sort of "to be determined", as the project progresses.   Sobieralski says we could have a Spring-Summer opening of the New Holland facility a year from now.

Another "mystery" brewery is planned for 15 Carlyle Street.  The operators aren't ready for any public announcement yet.  The plan right now would be for a fall of 2019 opening.

Sobieralski says “we could be” seeing even a third brewery at 119 W. Michigan Avenue, the site of the former Anson Hotel.

He says it's still early in the due-diligence process, but it could happen.   That would mean four breweries in Battle Creek.

Sobieralski also discussed:

  • Development in Fort Custer
  • Marijuana business inquiries subsiding
  • Downtown housing developments, including the Heritage Tower and McCamly Plaza
  • The impact of the new $10 million dollar small business fun.
