So I'm watching the NFL preseason game on TV Thursday night, and they're showing a graphic about the new Miami Dolphins coach. Adam Gase, and it says he's from Marshall. I didn't know that.

Probably because most of his success came in other cities, but that surprised me. In doing a little research, another reason why we might now have know that sooner is, in Gase's own words, he wasn't very good.

Gase, the first-year play caller, said he was "terrible" when he played in high school in Marshall, Mich.

"Not good. Slow. Could catch a little bit. Poor route runner,"

Gase went to Michigan State but didn't play football. But he really wanted to coach and then MSU coach Nick Saban took him under his wing, and when Saban left for LSU, he took Gase with him.. He started as a scouting assistant with the Detroit Lions in the early 2000's under Mike Martz, who, for a while was thought of as an offensive genius when he ran the St. Louis Rams "Greatest Show on Turf."

All this eventually led to offensive coordinator positions with the Denver Broncos (and Peyton Manning) and the Chicago Bears last season, with Jay Cutler.

This season, Gase is the youngest head coach in the NFL at 35, with the Dolphins.
