Portage will have one less place to shop for groceries as D&W has made a sudden announcement they are closing their Portage store.

“Decisions like this are never easy, and this should not be taken as a reflection of the commitment of our Portage associates or those at any other D&W Fresh Market location,” Meredith Gremel, vice president of corporate affairs for D&W said in a statement emailed to MLive on Tuesday, February 26.

The news seems curious as Aldi has just expanded a number of area stores and Fresh Thyme market is opening soon in Portage. Perhaps these are the reasons D & W has not renewed their lease on the storefront at 525 Romence Road.

While the Portage location has no precise date to close, expect the shopping carts to be gone from the parking lot by mid- March. The Kalamazoo stores at Parkview Avenue and Oakland Drive will remain open, Gremel told MLive, two of 11 stores throughout Michigan.
