Whether you're looking to break your routine, rediscover old culinary haunts, or searching for a new place to bring the family when they visit, I've got four great breakfast spots in Kalamazoo you need to check out.

    Studio Grill

    312 W Michigan Ave

Open for breakfast and lunch, Studio Grill is at once a restaurant, full service coffee bar, and art gallery. Aside from being able to order an actual cup of coffee with your meal, their homemade jams and Serrano pepper sauce help to make the standard American breakfast of eggs/meat/toast stand out. Vegan and vegetarian friendly, and full kid's menu available, there's something to please every palate. And, if their prices weren't already more than affordable, you can save by joining the Clean Plate Club and getting a meal free!

Down side: It's a  smaller restaurant, so either arrive early, or plan on a wait, especially if you have a party of five or more.

Favorite Breakfast: Five Alarm Omelet, extra Serrano pepper sauce. Coffee. Rye toast with raspberry jam.

    Cosmo's Cucina

    804 W Vine St

Upstairs from the best bar in Kalamazoo (in my humble opinion), Cosmo's is known as a weeknight dinner destination. But on the weekends they offer up a breakfast fare with specials changing weekly, dictated by seasonal finds. Quiches, a variety of waffles, and scrambles can be paired with a brunch cocktail of choice. Enjoy patio seating when weather permits.

Down side: The restaurant is not equipped with an elevator, so those with mobility issues may experience problems.

Favorite meal: I know it sounds lame, but the regular breakfast special of two eggs/meat/toast/coffee never fails to impress. Maybe it's something about the rosemary potatoes, or the added fresh fruit garnish, but I would be hard pressed to find as much delicious, local food for one great price.

    East Egg

    2814 Portage Street

Benedicts, crepes, pancakes, and more, there are three East Egg locations in the Kalamazoo area; Milwood, Campus, and in Portage by the mall. I'm going to level with you; there's not much to East Egg, but there doesn't need to be. They have a menu of all everything you know and love plus some signature items, they make and serve homemade freezer jams, and they're super affordable. A real people-pleaser. So when you're looking for a place without a long wait, where you can get in and get out with a full stomach, East Egg is your jam.

Down side: As welcoming as the establishments are, I wouldn't say the atmosphere says "get cozy and stay a while." I wouldn't, for instance, go there to catch up with a friend for two hours. The restaurant seems poised for turn-over.

Favorite meal: Breakfast Hash and coffee- it's everything breakfasty in a bowl, served hot with melted cheese. Like I said, people-pleaser.

    Colonial Kitchen Pancake House

    330 N Drake Rd,

If you are looking for easy, fast seating, on a Saturday or Sunday, Colonial Kitchen Pancake House is ready to accommodate. That place is huge. Their menu boasts typical American breakfast fare, from pancakes to benedicts, omelettes to waffles - and I have never walked out disappointed. Though, just like East Egg, it's more for getting the job done; get in, eat, get out, so don't expect a mimosa bar and chocolate fondue station. Just good breakfast served fast. Bonus: they have several different hot sauces to choose from, if you are so inclined.

Down side: Depending on what time you're hittin' up the Kitchen, parking can be at a premium.

Favorite meal: Breakfast Burrito - big enough for two people.
