Kalamazoo: What’s Going At The Corner of East Main & Southworth
My great-grandmother lived in the red and white house that sits at the corner of Hazard and East Main before she passed in late 2019 and for as long as I remember the next corner over there was nothing but empty land that was used as a cut-through.
I'm obviously on the younger side and not sure if something stood there before but I assumed nothing would ever change. In the past few months some motion has been going on with this plot of land and fencing has gone up. The most recent update came out earlier today and we can begin to speculate what's happening.
Earlier today the framing of the project has gone up, raising questions about what the city has approved to be built here. There are a plethora of options to choose from but the hardest part is thinking about what will be the most beneficial in the current area. As you can see below right now there are no clear indicators on what the project is.
The Eastside has some areas that could use a bolster and whatever business comes in to occupy this space should have a successful launch. I could see a restaurant being in the top 3 choices considering there are only 2 of them on the entire road. There is McGonigle's and the Mexican restaurant on the most eastern side of the road but that's it.
Wildly, we could see a small family-owned business pop into this space, something like a coffee shop, boutique, or salon. All of these businesses have a saturated competition field but could still have a very lucrative storefront with this location.
Maybe we get something crazy like an open studio place or clubhouse-like scenario. I know plenty of people or businesses that are looking for a place to host events and maybe this could be it.
I have absolutely no clue what's going on with this plot of land but wanted to get the conversation started. I'm sure it won't be any of the usual 3 culprits so the benefit for the community should show itself quickly.
