Love for Historic Kalamazoo Architecture Leads to New Residential/Retail Space
Still in it's concept phase, a new downtown development is but months away from beginning... and it's pretty exciting.
The old PNC Building at the corner of West Michigan and the Kalamazoo Mall is about to undertake a remodel that will render a dozen luxury residential units and two penthouses. But what about the nearly 8,000 square feet of retail space? According to an article:
...the building’s large, vaulted lobby will house either a commercial tenant in an open-office style environment, or an “Eataly”-style upscale food court and marketplace experience, which could include a fishmonger, bakery, deli and other prepared-foods counters.
Tom Huff, who is the brains behind this development says of the project, “I love these old buildings. I love keeping them alive.” It's wonderful to see a member of the community dedicated to the preservation of the architecture that makes Kalamazoo so unique, and at the same time breathe new life into the old idea of city living, where your job, your favorite restaurants, and all the entertainment was a short walk away.
One of my dreams was to live in an open-concept loft with long windows, exposed brick, and a view overlooking a bustling metropolis. I can't wait to see what Thomas Huff and his company have in store.
