Meijer vs. Marvel: Who Makes More Per Year?
This weekend the latest film in the Marvel franchise, Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is releasing to theatres throughout West Michigan as well as the rest of the world.
Generally, when you think of companies that bring in massive amounts of money, Marvel is one of them. In fact, after grossing over $25 billion on the Marvel Cinematic universe in its lifetime, Marvel has the biggest movie franchise of all time.
But it's not all on the big screen -- between comic books, toys and movies, they're bringing in a ton of cash. But what about compared to other industries? How does Marvel stack up to one of Michigan's biggest companies: Meijer
Who Made More in 2021?
Since Marvel is broken into two major companies, we'll have to add some numbers. The MCU made more money last year than in 2020, owning 30% of the movie industry's profits last year alone. And it's not just the movies that are making them money, Comic Book sales went up 65% across the board in 2021. However, due to the complicated nature of publishing rights when it comes to comics, we will omit those numbers and just stick to the Disney owned Marvel Cinematic Universe for this comparison.
In 2021, Marvel made $4.5 billion dollars worldwide at the box office. Meijer beat them out massively, making $19.5 billion dollars in revenue according to Forbes.
Who has made more revenue overall?:
It's hard to find lifetime data on revenue for Meijer, so instead we will focus on the past five years for Meijer.
From 2017-2021 Meijer made 92.8 billion dollars based on data from multiple year end reports, while marvel has only made $22.9 billion dollars on the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe since it's launch in 2008.
Meijer vs. Marvel by the numbers:
So while Meijer does create more revenue, due to the amount of employees they have and the natures of their positions, they tend to make less. However, there are several positions at Meijer that clear over six figures, so don't let these stats fool you.
So while Marvel may have the better brand recognition, here in Michigan (and financially over all), Meijer is king.
And while likely, no one has ever compared these two companies, it's kind of cool to see exactly how much money Meijer brings to West Michigan and their impact upon the midwest.
