Now that the end of winter is in sight, we can have a little fun. Inspired by a similar contest in Scotland that went viral, the Michigan Department of Transportation set up a little contest for the kids back in January, where children were encouraged to submit names for the individual snow plows. Encouraged by media types like Ch. 8's Ellen Bacca, in the first two days, they were overwhelmed with some 6,000 entries.

Some of the names submitted by Michiganders included, "Plowy McPlow Face," "Sir Salt a Lot" and "Little Snow Peep."

But the state of Minnesota picked up on this, and I have to tell you, I like their names better. (Maybe it's because they get more snow that we do. And in all fairness, it's hard to find all the snowplow names on the MDOT site, as they're not on the road at the moment. Phew!)

Here the Minnesota names:

  • Darth Blader
  • F.Salt Fitzgerald
  • Duck Duck Orange Truck
  • Ope, Just going to plow right past you. (Ope should be near and dear to our Michigan hearts.
  • Plow Bunyan (well, it is Minnesota)
  • Snowbi Wan Kenobi
  • The Truck Formerly Known As Plow (Again, this is Minnesota)
  • Plowy McPlow Face

Three of the runners up I thought were especially Minnesota: Mary Tyler More Snow, Road Carew, Raspberry Brrrr-et and Purple Snow. But again, Michigan didn't allow real people names, so Gordie Plow wasn't eligible.

Regardless, it was a fun contest, and one top of trying to plow through winter, it was a nice diversion from the pandemic.

Maybe we should have a summer contest to name construction crews.
