The Kalamazoo Area Lost Pets Facebook page posted a special warning about coyotes that's gone viral.

We've mentioned the risk of leaving your pets unattended when coyotes of been spotted in the past.  Those mentions have been met with quite a few doubters.  Many people believe it's simply not a big deal.  This time of year, however, it wouldn't hurt to use caution according to the Kalamazoo Area Lost Pets facebook page,

WARNING!!!!!
The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Please do not take chances and let your dogs out alone and don’t allow your outdoor cats to roam. Although Coyotes are prevalent in outlying and rural areas of the county, they are also within the city limits of Kalamazoo and Portage, and some of the smaller towns as well.

The facebook post goes on to explain that the risk to your pets is dramatically increased during this 58-63 day gestation period.  In fact, they likely know your daily routine.  For example, if you let your dog out each evening before bed at the same time, the coyotes are expecting your pet.  Worse yet, male dogs are often attracted to and lured by the smell of female coyotes.  That's when local pets are typically killed by the male coyotes.
