Seventy-one Dogs Found In Shocking Neglect Case In Calhoun County
Authorities recently discovered a home in Newton Township, a rural part of Calhoun County south of Battle Creek, that had 71 dogs living in hazardous conditions in a one story home.
Sadly, the police also discovered that there was one dog that had been deceased in the backyard when the Calhoun County sheriff's office responded to a report of possible animal neglect on Tuesday, just after 11 AM.

After a search of the Home showed the hazardous conditions with multiple sick animals, the police ended up taking about 68 dogs from the home and taking them to the animal shelter. In a video uploaded to Facebook from Wood TV8, Calhoun County Sheriff, Steven Hinkley described the situation:
This was a single story residence, rather small, most of the animals were found inside of the home. Now that we know there were 71 dogs. It’s hard to have them in one bedroom, so they were all throughout the house so you can imagine that living conditions were extremely extremely poor, so it was a terrible terrible situation for humans and pets.
As he continued, this situation is sadly not uncommon, as they face one of these situations at least once a year
I think one of the lessons that we continue to learn learned from some of these cases is that people truly care about the animal than themselves, and I think because of their love for the animal. They can’t see through that long to realize that there’s a point that they need to stop.
As one would assume, the small animal center is incredibly overwhelmed, so the sheriff's office is encouraging anybody in the community who can help with food or medication to reach out to the animal center. The woman in question will most likely be charged with felony animal abuse and animal torture.
