Deep Purple is a band that has made many swings through Michigan during their long history. Now one of those performances has seen the light of day for the first time in over 30 years.

Check out this recording of Deep Purple at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo from 1987, it was part of the House of Blue Light tour, according to Setlist.fm.

The night was May 7 and the band put on a 1:40 set which opens with Highway Star.

There are no opening remarks just the first chords of that classic track. The band first addresses the crowd after the third number, a cover of Jesus Christ Superstar. Lead singer Ian Gillian asks:

Hey Kzoo, how do you do?

Other big radio hits, Space Truckin' and Smoke on the Water close the show, part of a 5 song encore.

Another show from the band at Wings happened in 1996, and we look back at that show here.

Kalamazoo has some legendary rock shows in its history including Foghat playing the gymnasium at Hackett high school, an event that according to the urban legend, did permanent damage to the gym floor.

Punk Rockers Black Flag played an early show in their career in the downstairs bar at the downtown steakhouse Don Neal's.
