College is incredibly expensive, but Michigan has put efforts into place to try and bring tuition-free education to adults in Southwest Michigan.

Now it appears that Governor Gretchen Whitmer has plans to lower the age requirement so that young adults can also take advantage of the program, as she recently posted on Facebook:

Michiganders are looking for a real path towards good-paying jobs. Michigan Reconnect offers tuition-free community college and skills training for adults 25+, helping over 200,000 Michiganders. In 2026, it's time to permanently expand Reconnect to everyone 21 and older.

According to KVCC, the following current requirements must be met for those interested in signing up for Michigan Recconnect:

If you are age 25 or older, you might be eligible to earn your community college degree or certificate tuition-free through Michigan Reconnect.

 

Who can apply for Michigan Reconnect?

  • Students who have not yet completed a college degree and who have earned a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) or certificate of completion.
  • They must have lived in Michigan for at least a year.
  • Those who are 25 and older

How do I apply for Michigan Reconnect?

  • You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Apply for Reconnect.
  • Apply and enroll in a community or tribal college

The whole process of applying for Michigan Reconnect Scholarships is actually fairly easy, as they will immediately let you know about your eligibility to receive the scholarship.

This will be a huge opportunity for young adults who are getting into college a little bit behind others, students who are looking to redirect their college goals.
