If you've been to the grocery store lately, you may have noticed that the meat section is slim pickings at best, and if shops are lucky enough to have a healthy stock, there are strict limitations on how much you can buy. With national meat producers having to halt production due to break outs of COVID-19 within plants, and installation of social-distancing and new sanitation practices, our summer barbecues are looking to be a little on the lean side. That is, unless you shop local.

I reached out to Katelyn Bekken, Market Manager at People's Food Coop in Kalamazoo to ask where Kalamazoo residents can get local meat before the Farmers Market opens for the season on June 6th.

She suggested Naturally Norms from Carlson Farms, saying, quote "Currently, they set up at the Food Dance parking lot until (Kalamazoo Farmers Market) opens in June," and, "Trillium Wood Farms near Lansing, female owned and operated!"

But probably the most famous of the Kalamazoo meat mongers is Dave from Young Earth, but as Katelyn pointed out, "He doesn't have online information or do pre-orders, and he's not at the Drive-Thru Market, but is across the street at the Bank Street Winter Market each Saturday from 8am-1pm until KFM opens on June 6th."

Three great local meat sources saving your summer cookouts one hormone-free cut at a time. Look for these and other great Michigan meat at this year's Kalamazoo Farmers Market.
