Grand Rapids, Lansing & These Others Are The 30 Least Equitable School Districts In Michigan

Out of all the publically funded things in the state, school is most definitely one of the most important aside from public service positions. It's the foundation of what path your child will take into adulthood. Sadly, some kids have a disadvantage when it comes to the school they grow up going to, as some schools are more equitable than others.

By these I mean there are some schools that have different expenditures for public elementary and secondary schools per pupil (EPP). Not only that but school districts also have different levels of income, which has a direct impact on how schools are ranked from most to least equitable in the state.

Looking at the graph below, it's no surprise that you can see that higher-ranked school districts in the state are places that have way more income flowing into the doors.

Unfortunately, Grand Rapids, Paw Paw, and Lansing schools, as well as 27 other districts throughout the lower and upper peninsula landed on the 30 least equitable school districts list, as WalletHub determined:

Michigan has the 25th least equitable school districts in the U.S. overall, but some districts within the state are fairer than others. To find out where school funding is distributed most equitably, WalletHub scored 531 districts in Michigan based on two metrics: average household income and expenditures for public elementary and secondary schools per pupil.
