Michigan’s Most Popular Area Code Running Low On Numbers & Will Switch To 679
Since area codes were first introduced in 1947, many areas have seen changes in their area codes, with new ones needing to be expanded as the population grew. Its origins begin with the American Telephone & Telegraph company, now known as AT&T during the World War II era.
The entire idea was to quicken the time it took for long-distance calls to connect without needing an operator's intermediary help. However, because this was catching on, and it was a success they needed to create a universal system that would allow and require everyone to have an area code, which is when they introduced the continent-wide telephone numbering plan.

Fast forward to today and even area codes that are iconic and synonymous with the city like Detroit are looking at a new area code.
Recently wxyz.com reported that Detroit would now be getting a new area code And would be switching over to a mandatory 10-digit dialing system.
The city of Detroit and its surrounding areas with a 313 area code will be switching to a 10-digit dialing requirement and a new overlay area code starting later this year. About two years ago, the North American Numbering Plan proposed that the area start using area code 679 as the number combinations with 313 are running out. The Michigan Public Service Comission later approved that plan.
That's the one issue is because Detroit's area code has expanded to nearby neighborhoods, there are fewer and fewer number combinations remaining available, which is why the switch is required.
