Is there something in the air? Because just this week we have heard of so many businesses in the Kalamazoo area that are closing. Since the late 80s, Godfather’s Pizza has been a staple of Kalamazoo, and the family-owned business announced it would be closing after the passing of its longtime owner.

Then it came to Boonzaaijer Bakery which has been around for 62 years and is as Kalamazoo as you can get. They also announced that they would be closing for good, which prompted many people to flood their doors and try to leave them with a nice paycheck to go home to. Now, another core restaurant that has been in Kalamazoo for quite some time announced they will be closing after 25 years.

The Oakland Bistro on Oakland Drive announced that they would indeed be shutting their doors December 31st as well and they wished their customers a heartfelt goodbye in a Facebook post:

It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the Oakwood Bistro will be closing for business at the start of the new year. The last day of service will be December 31. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Kalamazoo community and all of our faithful staff and regulars who have made the Oakwood Bistro such a warm, welcoming, and delicious restaurant over the last 25 years. We will miss you all!

I don’t know why all of these businesses are suddenly closing, but this is more proof that we need to band together and continue to support local businesses to strengthen this community. We wish all of them, including the most recently announced Oakland Bistro the best going forward, and hopefully they can have a better 2024.
