Dangerous Weather & Tornados Could Be In Store For Southwest Michigan
We recently just passed the one-year mark here in Southwest Michigan when, out of nowhere, a tornado ripped through Portage and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
The city is still recovering from that tornado, which luckily did not take anybody’s life. But because we are in such a unique place in the country, May is a hotbed for potentially dangerous weather. Michigan storm chasers are currently eyeballing a storm that they feel could bring severe weather from Thursday evening through Friday morning on May 15 and 16th.

In a Facebook post, they detailed how they are closely monitoring a storm system that has the potential to materialize into something very severe.
Especially now that we are getting into storm season, everybody should have a severe weather plan and always keep an eye on potential storms, which is what this group aims to do throughout the year.
Here is a rundown of what they say may happen:
The main hazard with this event will be damaging straight line winds, with perhaps a couple embedded spin-up tornadoes. Again, this will be another system that moves through during the overnight hours, so any speed up or slow down of the system entirely would result in either better chances for severe on Thursday for west Michigan, or better chances for severe on Friday for eastern Michigan.
They went on to elaborate how storms can materialize quickly during this time of year:
Think of it as a chain reaction. We are at the point of the year where an initial round of storms has an impact on what happens in the next day, maybe even two days.
