Trump Administration Pulls A Quick One On Michigan Schools & Pulls $42M Away
When it came time for Michigan schools to submit their delayed requests for late reimbursement of funds that were promised to them recently, it was already too late. The schools that had been given until March 28th, 2026, to submit the requests, found out the Trump Administration had moved it up a year, to 2025.
That would have been fine for the schools, had they not received the notice that they moved it up one year AFTER March 28th. Proper planning would have allowed these notices to go out well before the March 28th, 2025 deadline, but that just was not the case.

Recently, Fox 2 News reported on the Trump Administration's new move, which involved taking money that had already been approved. According to the Michigan Department of Education:
The Trump Administration has pulled back more than $40 million in pre-approved projects that Michigan school districts were told they would be reimbursed for. The state superintendent said the U.S. Department of Education moved the deadline for requesting reimbursements to March 28, sending the email after changing the date
They also highlighted which school districts would be most affected by this move:
27 school districts, including in Flint, Hamtramck, Lincoln Park, Pontiac, and Woodhaven-Brownstown, are impacted.
According to MDE, that money would have been going to heating, ventilation, windows, air conditioning, and other building infrastructure. One of the school districts affected is Battle Creek, which had $3,389,571.43 promised to them.
Also in Southwest Michigan, Benton Harbor Area Schools was approved for $4,579,396.00, and Van Buren Public Schools had $90,000.00 that was approved for them.
