Sail into Memorial Day Weekend with a Virtual Yacht Rock Party
Break out the gold chains, champagne and smooth sounds of the 70s as Kalamazoo State Theatre hosts a yacht rock livestream event to kickoff Summer.
We haven't had concerts for a while now, and it looks like live events may still be on hold for a time. Virtual shows are the new "it" thing and Kalamazoo State Theatre has something unique to kick off Summer: a yacht rock Captain's Dance Party.
Urban Dictionary defines Yacht Rock as,
Another name for the adult-contemporary musical movement in the late 1970's and the early 1980's. It was defined mostly by its smooth sound. Popular Yacht Rockers include: Kenny Loggins, the Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan.
Sirius XM satelite radio has an entire channel devoted to the simulated, sophisticated, faux jazz-influenced, sensitive singer songwriter wanna be rockers. Spotify has playlists, Pandora a channel and you can hear the irony. Those songs you couldn't get away from on the radio in the late 70s are back again:
- Kenny Loggins | "This Is It"
- Doobie Brothers | "What A Fool Believes"
- Gino Vanelli | "I Just Wanna Stop"
- Gerry Rafferty | "Baker Street"
- Ambrosia | "Biggest Part of Me"
- Robbie Dupree | "Steal Away"
- Seals & Crofts | "Summer Breeeze"
- 10 cc | "I'm Not in Love"
The thing is, even if you don't recognize the titles, I guarantee you'd know at least 5, if not 7 or 8 of those songs. So, don't shave those sideburns yet, mix up some colorful, fruity drinks at home and check out the virtual show and make it a smooth start to Summer.
