Scientists say there are around 50 million northern cardinals in North America, and that the odds of seeing a yellow one are approximately one in 10 million. That's a seriously small amount of yellow cardinals, as the Michigan Field Guide recently described about the sighting that took place in late 2024:

A rare yellow northern cardinal has been spotted in Bath Township near Lansing, and scientists believe it may be one of the rarest birds currently living in North America. The bird was first noticed by longtime backyard birders Arlene and John McDaniel, who couldn't believe what they were seeing when it appeared near their feeder just before Christmas. After nearly 40 years of birdwatching, they had never encountered anything like it.

One person even saw spotting the rare bird as a higher sign of life, as they shared in the comments:

He was in my backyard 2 years ago! I was fighting an aggressive form of breast cancer. He was around for almost 2 weeks. I received a call from my oncologist that my tumor was no longer seen on the mammogram and never seen him again. He is out there and I am so thankful that Jesus let me see him.

Experts say that at any given time, there may be as few as 5 of these yellow cardinals in North America, which gives you an idea of how rare the sighting was.
