The last thing that you would ever want to hear from a dentist is that you need to get your blood tested for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV infection, which is what recently happened at the family health center in Kalamazoo.

Multiple people received letters and notifications that during their visit on November 5, it is quite possible that certain instruments that were used may not have been properly sterilized, and there may be a risk of infection.

As far as how this all happened, a recent report from Fox 17 indicates how the possible transmission of Hepatitis and HIV could have happened:

The concern stems from a potential malfunction of an autoclave, a device that uses high heat to kill microorganisms and sterilize dental equipment. The autoclave may not have properly sterilized some dental instruments used on November 5. Neither the health department nor Family Health Center said which specific dental facility was affected by the potential sterilization issue. Family Health Center said new safety measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Luckily, as of now, there have been no reports of any infection or negative health concerns connected to the people who were notified, but it still raises some serious concerns over the safety of getting dental work done at the family health center going forward.

They are claiming that this incident is isolated and there is no fear of any adverse health concerns for those in need of dental services in the future.
