Many Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Ingham county residents in the dark as heavy winds and freezing rain hits Michigan.

And you thought Tax day was all you had to worry about in the middle of April.  As of 12:10 PM Sunday the Consumer Energy outage map shows just over 1,000 residents are without power in Kalamazoo County and just over 3,000 in Calhoun County.  That same outage map shows Lansing getting hit hard as well with 3-4,000 residents losing their juice.

Great Lakes Energy sent us this press release this morning,

Great Lakes Energy lineworker crews continue restoration efforts today after heavy snow, ice and wind knocked out power to members in 22 of the cooperative’s 26 counties. Since late Friday night, crews have restored power to 15,368 members.

As of 10 a.m. on Sunday 1,656 members in 17 counties were without power. GLE lineworker crews assisted by outside contractor crews continue to battle the elements as they work to restore power. The heavy spring snow has caused trees to sag or fall on lines impacting efforts.

Of the 17 counties with GLE members currently without power, the largest outages are in parts of Antrim, Charlevoix and Newaygo counties.

Rain/Freezing Rain expected all day for Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties followed by a rain and snow mix Sunday Night and Monday.  No real relief from the wet wintery mix until Wednesday according to the National Weather Service.

A HUGE thank you to the crews working hard in this terrible weather this weekend.

As I type this, I can hear the ice hitting the roof of the radio station HARD!  Be careful out there.  We'll keep you up to date on this situation on-air and on-line right here.
