Back on October 17, 1988, Kalamazoo rock station 1077 RKR hit the airwaves for the very first time. When you talk about radio stations in one market, very few can say that they have made it 35 years, but the rocker continues to be Kalamazoo rock station and continues to grow and expand with the times.

The station has been with Townsquare Media for over 10 years now after the company acquired 53 stations from Cumulus. The Rocker has seen many changes in lineup in those 35 years but never has the before now been so focused on the local community and helping out businesses in that community.

Back in the day radio was a different beast and there were many ways we used to try and reach our audience, without the assistance of the internet. That said, it wasn’t uncommon to see radio station commercials play on television and billboards, and many radio stations still advertise on billboards.

There was a slew of billboards made up for 1077 RKR in the early 90s as well as a TV commercial that was recently made available to us by a man named Tom Comes. At the time he was an account supervisor and worked with station management to create those billboards to firmly position WRKR as the rock station for Southwest Michigan.

Enjoy some of this nostalgia below on a most fitting Throwback Thursday and let us know if you remember any of these billboards, or perhaps some other ones we don't have pictures of. Rock on Kalamazoo.
